Duplicate product descriptions: when they hurt, and how to fix them
Most stores have duplicate product descriptions without meaning to: the manufacturer’s copy used by every retailer selling the product, the same paragraph across colours and sizes, or a template sentence with only the product name changed. Google does not penalise this — but it does pick one page to show and leave the rest out.

What Google actually does with duplicates
There is no “duplicate content penalty” for ordinary product copy. What happens is filtering: when several pages say the same thing, Google chooses the one it thinks is most useful and leaves the others out of the index or the results. Your page loses to the manufacturer’s site, to a larger retailer, or to another of your own pages.
In Search Console that shows up as Crawled – currently not indexed or “Duplicate, Google chose different canonical than user”. On large catalogues it is the most common reason product pages are not indexed.
Variants are a separate case. Pages for each colour or size of one product are meant to be similar. Point them at one main product page with a canonical tag, or use a single page with a variant selector, rather than writing artificially different text for each.
Which duplicates to fix first
- Manufacturer copy: The same text as the brand’s site and every other retailer — the main reason products are left out.
- Template text: One paragraph reused across a category with only the name changed.
- Variant pages: A separate address per colour or size with the same text — fix with canonicals, not rewrites.
- Tag and filter pages: Pages that list the same products as a category under another name.
- Very short descriptions: Two lines are not a duplicate, but give Google nothing to tell the pages apart.
How to make each product page unique
- Start with products that already have impressions or sales — not the whole catalogue at once.
- Add what only you can say: specs in a table, sizing and fit, materials and care, what it is for and who it suits, your own photos, real reviews and questions.
- Keep the manufacturer’s spec sheet if it is accurate — the problem is having nothing else.
- Canonicalise variants to one main product page.
- Track indexing for four weeks. The writing autopilot drafts rewrites from each product’s own specs, for your approval.
Questions people ask
- Does Google penalise duplicate product descriptions?
- No. It filters duplicates — shows one version and leaves the others out — which can look like a penalty when your pages are the ones left out.
- Is it safe to rewrite descriptions with AI?
- Yes, if each rewrite is accurate, based on real product facts and reviewed. Mass-producing near-identical AI paragraphs only creates a new kind of duplicate.
- How do I find duplicate descriptions on my store?
- The free product description audit checks a Shopify or WooCommerce catalogue with no login. The site audit compares the text of every crawled page and groups near-duplicates.
