llms.txt for ecommerce: does your store need one?
llms.txt is a proposed plain-text file, placed at yoursite.com/llms.txt, that gives AI assistants a short summary of a site and links to its most important pages. It was proposed in 2024, and SEO tools started flagging it soon after. Here is what it can and cannot do for a store.

What llms.txt does — and does not — do
The idea is simple: instead of an AI assistant guessing what matters on your site from menus and footers, you tell it in a few lines — who you are, what you sell, and which category, guide and policy pages to read.
What it does not do: it is not a Google ranking factor, and Google has said it does not use it for Search or AI Overviews. Whether other AI assistants read it is not well documented. So treat it as a cheap, low-risk extra, not a strategy.
What matters far more for being cited by AI assistants is that their crawlers can read your pages at all — see should you block AI crawlers — and that your pages answer questions clearly.
What to put in a store’s llms.txt
- A title: Your store’s name as an H1 line (# Store name).
- A one-line summary: What you sell and who for, as a quote line (> …).
- Main categories: Links to your top category pages, each with a few words on what is in it.
- Buying guides: Links to guides and comparisons that answer common questions.
- Policies: Shipping, returns, warranty and contact pages.
How to add one
- Write the file in Markdown, using the sections above — ten to thirty links is plenty.
- Upload it to the root of your site so it opens at /llms.txt (on Shopify this needs an app or a redirect to a hosted file; on WordPress, a plugin or your host’s file manager).
- Keep it current when categories change.
- Then spend the real effort on the pages it links to.
Questions people ask
- Is llms.txt a ranking factor?
- No. Google does not use it, and no AI assistant has said it ranks or cites pages because of it.
- Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
- No. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may fetch. llms.txt only describes the site; it does not allow or block anything.
- Does NicheSEO Pro check for it?
- Yes. The site audit notes when a site has no llms.txt — as a notice, not an error, because it is optional.
